Southampton Brewer Receives Top Industry Award
SOUTHAMPTON BREWER RECEIVES TOP INDUSTRY AWARD
Southampton Publick House brewer Phil Markowski was awarded the 2003 Association of Brewers Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation In Craft Brewing at the annual Craft Brewers Conference held recently in New Orleans, LA. This annual award is given to a single craft brewer nominated by peers and selected by committee "for demonstrating creativity, excellence in brewing and substantial contributions to the craft brewing community". The award considers an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary brewing ability and who has made significant contributions to the betterment of the Craft Brewing industry. The award is given to one brewer from one brewery. There are approximately 1400 craft breweries in the US.
"Phil was selected because of his creativity and inspiration in some of the exploratory historical Belgian beer styles he has incorporated into the offerings of the Southampton Publick House. His brewing skill is well known throughout the craft beer world" said Paul Gatza, Director of the Association of Brewers (Boulder, CO). Gatza also praised Markowski for his participation in helping other brewers troubleshoot their problems and for being "on the cutting edge of brewing technology." The award is named after Russell Schehrer, a pioneering Craft Brewer who established the Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver, Colorado, one of the nations first brewpubs. Russell Schehrer died in 1996 at the age of 38.
"This award means a lot to me. This is clearly one of the highpoints of my brewing career," said Mr. Markowski. In his 14 years as a professional brewer he has won over 20 individual awards at major brewing competitions, including 9 medals (5 Gold) at the industry's most prestigious competition, the Great American Beer Festival. Markowski has also published numerous technical and travel-related articles for brewing publications and has lectured at industry conferences.
Mr. Markowski's award-winning ales and lagers can enjoyed at the Southampton Publick House Microbrewery and Restaurant, established in July 1996 as the first and only Microbrewery /Restaurant located on the East End of Long Island. The Southampton Publick House is family owned/operated by the Sullivan Brothers - Don, Kevin, Charlie and Jim, and located in historic Southampton Village at 40 Bowden Square.
